Flying before 9/11 was a different experience. Not only could you meet grandma at the gate, there were very little restrictions even on the plane. As a teen I took a flight to France — an hour before landing the pilot invited me to sit in the cockpit as we neared landing. In the early morning light the plane descended over the English Channel and into France. Stunning. Inside the cockpit, the soft glow of instruments indicated direction, altitude, pressure, temperature and more. Carefully checked and adjusted.
